The Spirit of the Gifts and the Gift of the Spirit

This morning I was meeting with some men with whom I am studying Life in Christ, Lloyd-Jones’ sermons on 1 John. This is a marvelous and challenging book. He makes the case for there being (at least) 8 evidences of the Holy Spirit being present in your life – this is a helpful list.

  • You have a concern for your immortal soul.
  • You have a sensitivity to sin.
  • You have a belief in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • You notice that there is a conflict in you between your flesh (natural desires) and the Spirit.
  • You are aware of God working in you.
  • You are displaying the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23)
  • You have a sense that God is your Father (a spirit of adoption).
  • You display the gifts of the Spirit – summed up on one word: love.

What shall I render to thee for the gift of gifts, thine own dear Son, begotten, not created, my Redeemer, proxy, surety, substitute, his self emptying incomprehensible, his infinity of love beyond the heart’s grasp.  Herein is wider of wonders; he came below to raise me above, was born like me that I might become like him.  Herein is love; when I cannot rise to hymn he draws near on wings of grace to raise me to himself. . . . In him thou hast given me so much that heaven can give no more.                  -excerpted from Valley of Vision.
